five best decisions.

Inspired by a tweet by Design Mom, here are the best five decisions I’ve made in my adult life:

1. Give social work a try.
It taught me empathy. And helped strengthen my desire to serve others and make a difference in the world. Most importantly, it helped me to see how I could do that by opening my eyes to what needed to be changed and providing me with the tools to do so.

2. Move to Florida.
Moving to the other side of the country, and leaving all my friends and family at home, taught me countless lessons. That experience taught me more about myself than any other had up until that point (marriage now takes the prize in that category). And let’s not forget the fact that I got a three month pass to the Disney parks... for free. Life lessons or no life lessons, that alone makes it a good decision. Add in that I met my husband there and moving to Florida earns a spot in the “best decisions of my adult life” category.

3. Marry Jordan Bowman.
He’s smart, sweet, funny and handsome. He laughs in his sleep and makes me laugh when he’s awake. He calms me down, evens me out and helps me to be a better person. He is the happiest part of my life. Every day I’m reminded why marrying him is the best decision I’ve ever made.

4. Swap social work for art.
While social work was a wonderful experience and taught me a great deal, I soon learned that making it my career would burn me out. And when I learned that the turn-over rate for in-the-field social workers was only a few years, I decided it was time for a change. While art might not seem to have the same potential for good as social work does, it too has taught me a lot about myself and others. I have seen how I can make a difference with an art degree under my belt and the things I learned from social work will help me tremendously as I try to do just that.

5. Have a child.
No one could have prepared me this one. My heart breaks harder and loves deeper since this little girl came into my life. Every day my love for her grows, as does my love for her father. Parenthood is an amazing ride (sometimes like It’s A Small World, and other times more closely resembling Tower of Terror... fun, but oh so scary) and I’m so glad I have Jordan by my side through it all.

So there you have it. The five best decisions I’ve made in my adult life. What are your five best?
